Online Databases

We specialise in database-driven web pages with dynamic content, offering visitors many different ways of interacting with your website. Pages where the content is drawn from a database allow your site to incorporate many additional features, including:

• password-protected areas with pages available only to members
• online shopping systems allowing you to present up-to-date lists of products or services or browsing or purchase
• lists of all types - list, sort and search for products, services, members, weblinks, events, anything that can be listed
• online forms allowing your visitors to enter requested information, which can then be sent to you by e-mail or stored in the database
• automatic generation of RSS feeds to which your visitors can subscribe, to keep up to date with news or events relating to your organisation (an explanation of RSS feeds can be found on the SLA website)
• calendaring and reminder applications - your visitors can ask to be e-mailed reminders on specific dates
• online document storage - members of your organisation always have access to the latest versions of documentation

Our database of choice is the industry-standard, highly scalable MySQL, but we can also work with Microsoft Access and Microsoft SQL databases.

Localisation

Localisation is a portmanteau term used to refer to the process of making a website available to visitors from different regional, linguistic or cultural backgrounds. Intexta have experience in the following areas of localisation:

• Development of new bilingual or multilingual websites
• Provision of translations of all or part of an existing website
• Research and registration of appropriate country-specific domain names
• Advice and support with configuring desktop or laptop computers to use non-English character sets and keyboards
• Development of non-standard keyboard layouts to aid foreign-language input on Windows-based computers
• Provision of multiple currency options using live exchange rates
• Creation and sychronisation of subtitles and/or multiple soundtracks for web-based videos and DVDs

We are happy to receive enquiries about localisation in any European language and are particularly keen to support so-called "minority" languages such as Welsh, Catalan and Lallans.

Please note that we believe very strongly that translation work needs to be carried out by a qualified, experienced human translator with an outstanding knowledge of both the target and the source language. We do not offer or support so-called machine "translation" services.

Digital Media

Digital video and audio are increasingly being used to enhance informational, marketing and training materials. We have experience in the following areas of digital media:

• Web Video, including downloadable video in various popular formats and streaming video in Flash, Windows Media Player, QuickTime and RealPlayer formats
• DVD and CD authoring, including customised DVD menu structures and pathways, subtitles and multiple language tracks, if required (we can provide small numbers of CDs/DVDs in CD-R/DVD-R format; for a more professional appearance or larger quantities we can supply glass masters for use by CD/DVD duplication houses)
• Online audio, including downloadable audio tracks in popular formats and streaming audio using Flash
• Podcasts: we can provide you with the equipment and training to record, upload and publish your own podcasts

Domain Names

We can advise on and manage the registration of the full range of global and country-specific domain names (gTLDs and ccTLDs) for your organisation.

Site Maintenance

Regular maintenance is essential for any successful website. Websites which are more frequently updated are more likely to attract returning visitors; they encourage visitors to stay on your website for longer; and there is evidence that they are likely to come higher in search engine rankings.

We offer a number of maintenance options. The right option for you will depend on your level of technical expertise, the amount of time you (or your employees) have available, the size of your budget, the required frequency of updates, and the number of people in your organisation who are authorised to carry out updates. While we will tailor maintenance services to suit your organisation, our most popular offerings include:

• Fully managed maintenance service. You send updates to us (by e-mail if possible) and we make the changes, based on a pre-agreed schedule of fees
• Partial content management system. Suitable for updates to news items, events listings and weblinks. You make these changes yourself using an easy-to-use form-based interface. Other changes to your site are made by us as required.
• Blog. We can install and configure weblog software (or custom-write it for you). This is suitable if you envisage adding lots of articles containing mainly text and photos to your site, and has the additional advantage of an automatic RSS feed.
• Full content management system. We can provide our own modularCMS content management system or install a third-party CMS.
• Full FTP access. If you are familiar with web design programs such as Adobe Dreamweaver or Microsoft Expression Web, or if you can hand-code your website using a text editor, we can provide full FTP access so that you can download, edit and upload your own files.
